Ukraine Aligns with EU on Epoxy Derivatives in Food Contact Materials

Effective May 17, 2026, Ukraine restricts the use of certain epoxy derivatives in materials and articles intended for contact with food.

Ukraine’s Order No. 15 of Jan. 15, 2026, on the approval of Requirements for restricting the use of certain epoxy derivatives in materials and articles intended for contact with food is effective May 17, 2026.

This order aligns with the European Union’s Commission Regulation (EC) No 1895/2005.

The Order applies to food contact materials and articles, including active and intelligent materials and articles manufactured using or containing one or more of the following substances:

  • 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane bis(2,3-epoxypropyl) ether (BADGE), and some of its derivatives
  • Bis(hydroxyphenyl)methane bis(2,3-epoxypropyl)ethers, (BFDGE)
  • Other novolac glycidyl ethers (NOGE)

As in the EU, the use of BFDGE and NOGE will be banned in the manufacture of food contact materials and articles and the specific migration limits of BADGE will be strictly regulated once this order takes effect.

Furthermore, materials and objects containing BADGE and its derivatives must be accompanied by a written declaration in accordance with the requirements for a written declaration of conformity of materials and objects intended for contact with foodstuffs and a list of documents confirming the information specified in the declaration.
