UL Solutions President and CEO Jennifer Scanlon recently appeared on Decoder, The Verge’s podcast examining how technology decisions shape business and society. In the wide-ranging conversation with Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief of The Verge, Scanlon reflected on how UL Solutions’ long-standing focus on safety science and trust continues to guide its work, from electrical safety and fire testing to today’s software-driven products, including those with embedded artificial intelligence (AI).
Scanlon discussed the company’s history as a science-based organization founded to understand risk and its current mission of working for a safer world. She explained how testing, standards and independent certification help manufacturers, regulators, insurers and consumers develop confidence in products, while also creating a common framework that allows innovation to scale.
The conversation also turned to emerging challenges, including the safety of AI embedded in physical products and critical infrastructure. Scanlon emphasized that while AI introduces new considerations, the underlying question remains the same: Can the technology be trusted to operate as intended in the real world? She highlighted how UL Solutions is addressing demand for AI safety through UL 3115, its safety certification for AI-embedded products.
With the rapid deployment of AI systems and the current lack of consensus international frameworks for AI safety, UL Solutions’ work to help organizations deploy innovation responsibly and maintain public trust remains essential.
