How is building envelope testing performed?

Testing is performed in the laboratory and in the field across the project lifecycle, pre‑construction mock‑ups, during installation and after occupancy.

In laboratories, we subject assemblies to simulated extreme conditions (wind‑driven rain, hurricane/tornado winds, temperature extremes) and evaluate air, water, structural, thermal and impact performance to applicable AAMA/ASTM/CWCT/CSA/EN standards.

In the field, our experts use standardized methods (e.g., ASTM E1105 for water penetration; AAMA 501.2 for dynamic water; ASTM E779/E783 for air) to assess installation quality and compliance, and to diagnose sources of leakage or infiltration for remediation.

Frequently asked questions

In UL Solutions content, “building envelope” refers to the exterior enclosure systems and components, such as windows, doors, curtain walls, window walls, precast concrete, sloped glazing, masonry, rainscreens and metal cladding, whose performance is verified for air, water, structural, thermal and impact resistance.

Yes. Our commissioning services support owners throughout design and construction with peer reviews, mock‑up testing, construction reviews and field performance testing to reduce risk and enhance durability and in‑service performance.

Yes. UL Solutions conducts field testing on existing structures to identify sources of air and water leakage, assess installation quality and support remediation.

Depending on scope and region, we test to AAMA, ASTM, CWCT, CSA and EN standards. Examples include ASTM E1105 (field water), ASTM E283 (air leakage), ASTM E547 and AAMA 501.1/501.2 (water), and ASTM E330 (structural).

Building envelope centers of excellence include Canada and the U.K., with facilities such as our 52,000‑sq‑ft Montréal lab (mock‑ups to 60 ft) and a performance mock‑up lab in Telford, England.

Yes. In North America, our services can help owners and architects increase confidence and, where applicable, secure additional points for enhanced commissioning from programs such as BOMA Best, LEED and Net Zero.
