Have You Heard About the Newly Released Standard by BIFMA for Occasional-Use Seating?

September 10, 2018

The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) has recently released a new safety and performance standard, BIFMA X6.4-2018 for Occasional Use Seating. The BIFMA Board of Directors observed the need for this new standard to align with market expectations for seating products designed for less frequent use.

The X6.4-2018 standard defines the specific tests, laboratory equipment, conditions of testing, and recommended minimum levels to be used in the evaluation of safety, durability, and structural adequacy of occasional use seating products. Tests are based on the 95th percentile male, now weighing 275 lbs. Many of the tests align with ANSI/BIFMA X5.4-2012 Lounge and Public Seating.

With labs in US, Europe and Asia, UL offers the first and only program that certifies a product to meet BIFMA standards. Whether manufacturers of seating products are seeking to meet the new BIFMA X6.4-2018 standard or the more comprehensive BIFMA X5.4 standard, UL is a qualified, trusted partner that can help furniture manufacturers earn the third party validation necessary to ensure compliance. In addition, manufacturers who undergo the certification process have the added benefit of using the UL enhanced mark on their products and marketing materials, a clear signal to the market of their safety and sustainability accomplishments.
