ASTM Issues New Fabric Standards

September 13, 2016

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has issued the following standards:

REFERENCE NAME DESCRIPTION
ASTM D2594 - 04(2016) Standard Test Method for Stretch Properties of Knitted Fabrics Having Low Power Measures fabric growth and fabric stretch of knitted fabrics intended for use in swimwear, anchored slacks, and other form-fitting apparel (also commonly known as semi-support apparel) applications, as well as test conditions for measuring the fabric growth of knitted fabrics intended for use in sportswear and other loose-fitting apparel (also commonly known as comfort stretch apparel) applications.
ASTM D3511 / D3511M - 16 Standard Test Method for Pilling Resistance and Other Related Surface Changes of Textile Fabrics: Brush Pilling Tester Determines propensity of a fabric to form pills and other related surface changes on textiles using the brush pilling tester; intended to be used on upholstery, automotive, luggage and heavy duty uniform fabrics because it is highly abrasive.
ASTM D3512 / D3512M - 16 Standard Test Method for Pilling Resistance and Other Related Surface Changes of Textile Fabrics: Random Tumble Pilling Tester Determines propensity of a fabric to form pills and other related surface changes on textiles using the random tumble pilling tester; applicable to all types of woven and knitted apparel fabrics.
ASTM D3774 - 96(2016) Standard Test Method for Width of Textile Fabric Measures width of fabrics, pile or napped surface width, or both; applicable to full rolls, bolts of fabric, and short specimens removed from a roll or bolt.
ASTM D3882 - 08(2016) Standard Test Method for Bow and Skew in Woven and Knitted Fabrics Determines bow and skew of filling yarns in woven fabrics and the courses in knitted fabrics; also used to measure bow and skew of printed geometric designs.
ASTM D3990 - 12(2016) Standard Terminology Relating to Fabric Defects Specifies terminology covering defects in both woven and knit fabrics.
ASTM D4032 - 08(2016) Standard Test Method for Stiffness of Fabric by the Circular Bend Procedure Determines stiffness of fabrics by the circular bend procedure; applicable to all types of fabrics, including woven, knitted and nonwovens, of any fiber content.
ASTM D4158 - 08(2016) Standard Guide for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Uniform Abrasion) Determines resistance to abrasion of a wide range of textile materials using the uniform abrasion testing instrument. Fabrics of all types, including carpets, garments and nonwovens may be tested under this method.
ASTM D4964 - 96(2016) Standard Test Method for Tension and Elongation of Elastic Fabrics (Constant-Rate-of-Extension Type Tensile Testing Machine) Measures tension and elongation of wide or narrow elastic fabrics made from natural or man-made elastomers, either alone or in combination with other textile yarns, when tested with a constant-rate-of-extension (CRE) type tensile testing machine.
ASTM D4966 - 12(2016) Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Martindale Abrasion Tester Method) Determines abrasion resistance of textile fabrics using the Martindale abrasion tester. Fabrics of all types may be tested by this method but difficulties may arise with fabrics with a pile depth greater than 0.08 in. (2 mm).
