AHRI’s research arm, the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology Institute (AHRTI), held a Flammable Refrigerant Research and Planning Conference Oct 8-9 at UL in Northbrook, Il. More than 120 attendees from manufacturing sector, codes and standards committees and working groups, national laboratories, non-profit organizations, and government agencies attended the conference, which featured results from the AHRI-led collaborative flammable refrigerant research.

Sixteen presentations from AHRTI and other collaborative organizations covered a range of key issues related to the safe use of flammable refrigerants, including relevant regulations, codes and standards, whole room scale and component testing, as well as technician and first responder training. The attendees also had an open discussion about AHRTI’s current challenges and plans for the future.

AHRI, ASHRAE, the California Air Resources Board, and the U.S. Department of Energy initiated this $5.6 million collaborative research program to develop the technical knowledge needed to facilitate and accelerate the safe use of flammable refrigerants for the industry, as well as for the standards and codes communities.
