EPA Releases Alternatives for Flame Retardant Chemical HBCD

November 20, 2013

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released alternatives for the flame retardant chemical hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD).

The draft report is intended to promote the design and use of safer chemicals in consumer products and help manufacturers identify safer alternatives for polystyrene building insulation. One of the alternatives, a butadiene styrene brominated copolymer, is anticipated to be safer than HBCD and is currently in commercial production in the U.S.
