ECHA publishes updated “Guidance for Compiling SDSs”

January 8, 2014

By Elizabeth M. Cahill

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published the first edition (Version 1.0) of “Guidance on the compilation of safety data sheets” in September 2011.  This was amended by a corrigendum in December 2011.  The intention of the document is to give additional details on the requirements for Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) set out in REACH Annex II and the CLP.  In September 2013 ECHA released draft Version 2.0.  This draft completed the review process and was published on December 5, 2013.

Appendix 2 is updated to include guidance on including exposure scenario information in the SDS.  This information was previously part of a separate document.

Additionally, the guidance includes an elaboration on section “3.14 – Languages in which the SDS must be provided,” in accordance with the provisions of the new Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Regulation.  Specifically, this means that an SDS could include a language which is not an official language of any EU Member State.

The “Guidance for Downstream Users” document was also updated, and the “Guidance for Compiling SDSs” was amended accordingly.

Finally, the guidance underwent a formatting change and minor corrections, and references to expired transition periods were removed.
