ISO Releases ISO 17299-1:2014 Textiles — Determination of Deodorant Property

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has released ISO 17299-1:2014 Textiles — Determination of Deodorant Property that aims to specify the general principle of the deodorant textile products and deodorant testing methods for textile products.

The standard specifies these deodorant testing methods for textile products:

  • Evaluation of a Deodorant Property
  • Human Sensory Testing
  • Detector Tube Method
  • Gas Chromatography Method
  • Condensation Sampling Analysis
  • Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Sensor Method

The standard also enumerates the major component chemicals of unpleasant odors, namely as:

  • Toilet odor: Ammonia
  • Sweat odor: Ammonia, Acetic Acid, and Isovaleric Acid
  • Body odor (nonenal mixture odor): Ammonia, Acetic Acid, Isovaleric Acid, and Nonenal
  • Excrement odor: Ammonia, Acetic Acid, Hydrogen Sulfide, Methyl Mercaptan, and Indole

The standard covers the following:

  • Woven fabrics
  • Knits
  • Nonwovens
  • Fibers and yarns
  • Braiding products
  • Tapes and slings
