China Submits Draft Safety Technical Code for Infant and Children’s Textile Products

July 1, 2014

The Standardization Administration of the People’s Republic of China (SAC) has submitted a draft of the mandatory standard – The Safety Technical Code for Infants and Children's Textile Products, to the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade of the World Trade Organization (WTO/TBT). The notification number is G/TBT/N/CHN/1046, and the deadline for organization or individual comments on the draft provisions is July 6, 2014. The draft of the standard is intended to be approved 90 days after the notification, and effective 60 days after approval.

Why It Matters
The Standard provides technical requirements, test methods and inspection rules for the safety of infant and children’s textile products. The standard applies to textile products sold in mainland China and is intended for infants and children 14 years or younger.  In addition to GB18401 requisites, requirements for extractable heavy metals, phthalates, flammability, tensile strength, sharp points and edges of accessories, drawstring safety, and metal needles are included.  All technical requirements of this standard are mandatory.
