The following scientists, researchers and engineers are actively working on New Science at UL:
Stephen Kirk
Vice President and General Manager, UL Verification Services
Mr. Kirk is responsible for UL's wireless, interoperability, security and EMC businesses on a worldwide basis. He has extensive experience in the fast-moving technology sectors, including cellular, wireless communications and smart cards, particularly near field communications and mobile payments. Mr. Kirk was CEO of RFI Global Services Ltd., which was acquired by UL in 2010. He has a master's in engineering science from the University of Oxford.
Dirk Jan van den Heuvel
Managing Director, UL Collis
Dr. van den Heuvel founded the Collis Company in 1997 with the objective of focusing on secure transactions. Acquired by UL in 2012, Collis, through Dr. van den Heuvel's leadership, works with banks, governments and others to implement secure transaction technology through consultancy, training, test services and test tools. His expertise is in the payment, transit, mobile and ID management sectors. Dr. van den Heuvel has a doctorate in physics from the University of Leiden.

Hugues Thiebeauld
UK Security Manager
Mr. Thiebeauld has been working in embedded platform security for more than 10 years. He first worked on laser fault injection attacks on smart cards at Oberthur Card Systems. Then he joined Thales, a French CESTI, for several years. He eventually returned to Oberthur as a security expert and to lead the security improvements of Oberthur's products, including banking, ePassport and secure USIM cards. Mr. Thiebeauld also gained hands-on experience in Common Criteria and EMVCo evaluation schemes on native and Java card platforms. He recently joined RFI Global Services Ltd., acquired by UL in 2010, as a security and payment consultant. Mr. Thiebeauld has a degree from the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble.

Alan McHale
Principal Engineer, Contactless
Mr. McHale has been working for more than 20 years in the engineering field. He is an expert in the principles and practice of regulatory testing of radio frequency devices (contactless smart cards and devices, GSM cellular telephones and other radio-based technologies). Mr. McHale has worked closely on the development of test facilities for ISO/IEC 14443 contactless cards and devices, ICAO electronic passports, NFC, PayPass contactless cards, and EMVCo Level 1 contactless cards and devices; he has also supervised the testing of these technologies. Mr. McHale has an EMVCo Level 1 Contactless specialty designation. He has a Bachelor of Science in electronic engineering from the University of Southampton.
Andrew Jamieson
Point of Interaction Testing Manager, UL Verification Services
Mr. Jamieson has more than 18 years of experience working with payment systems and emerging technologies. During this time he has worked with many different aspects of cryptographic and embedded systems security and has authored a number of payments- and security-based patents, which have been granted around the world. As the Point of Interaction Testing Manager for UL, Mr. Jamieson is responsible for managing the payment device security evaluation work performed by UL globally. He also personally performs PCI DSS audits and PCI PTS evaluations, and he consults with clients on payment systems, security and compliance. Mr. Jamieson has presented on ATM and embedded systems security, cryptography and key management, and PCI PTS requirements internationally. He has also assisted in the creation of a number of best practice documents and security standards.
