UL Launches Shanghai Consumer Products Laboratory

July 10, 2014

SHANGHAI – June 13, 2014 – UL announced the opening of its new consumer products testing laboratory in Shanghai. Government officials representing the Xuhui district of Shanghai, where the new lab is located, joined representatives of UL customers in offering praise and best wishes at the ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the lab’s opening, Mr. Sajeev Jesudas, SVP & President of UL’s Consumer Business Unit, presided over the ceremony and made the speech.

“This new lab is another shining example of UL’s commitment to China, expanding our capabilities to perform a full suite of safety and quality testing across a wide range of consumer products.  This follows our opening last October of our new 30,000 square-meter test & certification facility in Suzhou.  These are clear, recent proofs of UL’s deep commitment to bring in our service as closer to our customer as possible.”  Sajeev said, “We aim to be not just a ‘one-stop-shop’ service provider, but an indispensable partner to our clients. We do that by providing an expert point of view and by delivering quality and customized verification solutions, all designed to help protect brands and fulfill the unique needs of manufacturers, retailers and distributors across multiple industries and markets.”

The product mindset and consumption patterns of the Chinese people are undergoing unprecedented change. Consumers in this massive market are paying more attention to the quality of the goods they buy, to the safety of the products their families use, to the impact their purchases make on health and the environment, and to the sustainability and accountability of the enterprises that make the things they buy.

Making things even more challenging for manufacturers, Chinese authorities are taking safety and quality supervision more seriously than ever, and are requiring ever more stringent and detailed testing and certification at every step of the manufacturing process. This is creating a vast demand for testing and certification services throughout the entire supply chain management in China.

As a result, UL today has become an important partner for Chinese manufacturers in their quest for steady growth. The UL Consumer business unit exists to help manufacturers and retailers verify every aspect of the supply chain and production process—from raw materials to disposal finished goods—in order to better manage risk and deliver products that are safe, socially responsible and compliant with industry and brand specifications.

UL’s new Shanghai Consumer Products Laboratory can now offer an elite team of more than 300 local professional experts in a 5,900 square-meter lab, helping our customers address safety and quality issues for products ranging from home appliances, to textiles, toys, cosmetics, and food, as well as ensure the quality of lighting products and furniture.
