MARIETTA, GA., February 13, 2018 — UL Environment, a division of UL (Underwriters Laboratories) today announced that products certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Standards will be featured on UL SPOT™, a web-based sustainability information tool that promotes responsible procurement of products. This new agreement between UL Environment and SFI will provide SPOT users access to SFI building materials, paper and packaging products that have been 3rd party certified to the SFI Fiber Sourcing and SFI Chain of Custody Standards.
SPOT features more than 50,000 credible green products and facilitates their selection for the design community, professional purchasers and others seeking sustainable products. Products with these certifications are in high demand by architects and designers because they specify certified building materials that contribute to LEED, BREEM, Green Globes and other rating systems. Having these products certified to SFI on SPOT also benefit professional purchasers that select SFI certified products to help their companies and facilities meet sustainable operations objectives.
“UL is pleased to include products certified to the SFI Standards in SPOT to provide architects, designers, builders and professional purchasers with a simpler way to find responsibly sourced products,” said Alberto Uggetti, vice president and general manager, UL Environment. “By partnering with SFI, UL is making progress on our goal to be the industry’s most trusted resource for sourcing sustainable products.”
The addition of these products to SPOT will enable architects, designers and builders and other procurement purchasers to easily identify wood and paper products that can help their projects achieve a point in the “sourcing of raw materials” Alternative Compliance Path under the LEED v4 rating system, as well as credits within GreenGlobes and BREEAM rating systems. Recently the U.S. Green Building Council recognized UL as a data partner and endorsed UL’s SPOT database as a tool that LEED Accredited Professionals and other project team members can use to find products that contribute to credits within LEED. Products certified to the SFI Standards in SPOT will be searchable by sustainable credits and feature documentation that can be included in LEED project submittals. Certified products will also be searchable in UL’s SPOT add-in for AutoDesk® Revit®, a leading building information modeling software tool.
“SFI is excited to feature products certified to the SFI Standards on SPOT including wood-based products intended for built environments and SFI paper, print and packaging products that will help purchasers identify products that meet their sustainable purchasing policies and secure operating credits in green building rating tools,” said Kathy Abusow, president & CEO, Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc. “SFI, with over 300 million acres certified to the SFI Forest Management Standard and SFI Fiber Sourcing and SFI Chain of Custody certification, is the largest sustainable forestry certification program in North America. Together with SPOT, the largest credible, sustainable product database, we are providing a compelling solution to assist the marketplace with responsible sourcing.”
SPOT database is powered by UL, a leading safety science company and developer of globally-recognized sustainability standards with a 120+ year history. In additional to the SPOT add-in for Revit, UL is developing tools such as expanded listings to enhance the ability to find and select healthier, more sustainable products.
