TORONTO, March 30, 2017 —UL, a global safety science organization, today announced that the company’s Toronto-based safety testing facility for appliances and controls is one of the few Canadian facilities approved for nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions testing. NOx testing is required by South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) in Southern California, which sets emissions testing requirements for the region. UL’s facility was approved by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) for Rules 1111, 1121, and 1146.2 protocols for gas furnaces, water heaters, and boilers respectively.
“Our facility was designed with U.S. and Canadian gas appliance manufacturers in mind, and we are now able to offer both safety testing and performance testing, including NOx, in one laboratory as part of a streamlined process,” said Travis Hardin, business development manager with UL’s HVAC division. “Our aim is to facilitate a speedier time to market for Canadian manufacturers seeking to sell their products into California.”
The State of California has identified oxides of nitrogen (NOx), generated by the interaction of heat and sunlight with emissions emanating from industrial facilities, electric utilities, motor vehicle and fuel burning equipment exhaust, etc., as a potentially hazardous pollutant detrimental to air quality. Canadian gas appliance manufacturers can now enjoy the benefits of a local NOx test laboratory, facilitating one-stop-shopping access to the lucrative California market.
“We are very pleased to receive the approval to conduct NOx testing at our Toronto facility, as this enables us to deliver a much needed service to our Canadian clients locally,” said Joe Hosey, general manager of UL in Canada. “UL has been in operation in Canada since 1920, serving the needs of the local market. These new gas testing capabilities are another example of how we continually innovate with solutions for our clients’ needs.”
