Europe Amends KPCS for International Trade of Rough Diamonds

May 13, 2016

The European Commission (EC) has issued Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/557 Amending Council Regulation (EC) No 2368/2002 Implementing the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme for the International Trade in Rough Diamonds, allowing the Central African Republic to start exporting rough diamonds.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) is a joint initiative by the government, industry and civil society to ensure that diamond purchases are not financing violence by rebel movements and their allies against legitimate governments.

The regulation became effective April 13, 2016.
