Industrial Control Panel Shop Program

UL’s Industrial Control Panel Shop Program (ICP Program) is designed for manufacturers who custom-build or mass-produce industrial control panels (ICP) to apply UL Marks for the United States and Canada at their factories.

UL’s Safety Marks are the most credible and sought-after certification marks in North America. When regulators, specifiers and end-product certifiers see the familiar trusted UL Mark, they are confident that the panel has met the certification requirements. Our program makes it convenient to receive UL certification while allowing maximum flexibility in panel design. Additionally, UL also offers hazardous location options as well as CE Marking assistance for Europe.

Onsite customer location training

A project for an ordinary location Listing provides certification and training with a UL engineer at your facility for private onboarding training. The training will primarily focus on UL’s policies for building industrial control panels and how to navigate the UL 508A Standard.

UL location training

A project for an ordinary location Listing provides certification and training at a UL location. Obtain training by going to one of the following UL locations versus UL coming to your facility: Northbrook, IL; Melville, NY; Raleigh, NC; Brea, CA; Vancouver, WA; Fremont, CA; Plano, TX; Houston, TX

Manufacturer technical representative

In addition to training, each manufacturing location producing industrial control panels with UL labels will need to qualify and maintain on staff at least one UL 508A qualified manufacturer technical representative (MTR). The MTR is qualified through the successful completion of an online examination based on the requirements of the UL 508A Standard. Access to the examination is provided immediately following the training. Individuals passing the examination are qualified for a three-year period. Details about this requirement are provided during the initial training session.

Post-certification

Once you have completed the program and have an established Industrial Control Panel file, UL will make a minimum of four unannounced visits per year to ensure that you are building panels in accordance to UL 508A. The Follow-Up Service (FUS) inspections will begin within 60 days of your company having an active Industrial Control Panel File if an initial production inspection is not scheduled prior to this time.

Hazardous Locations for U.S. and Canada

It is necessary to have UL ordinary location coverage, UL 508A, prior to adding hazardous locations coverage, UL 698A, and for UL HazLoc Panels Class I Division 1 and 2.

Hazardous Locations Post Certification

Once you have completed the program and have an established Industrial Control Panel file, there is an annual maintenance fee.

CE Marking Assistance

UL can provide CE Marking Assistance to comply with directives from the European Union and any other country that accepts CE Marking as a demonstration of conformity.

UL’s CE Marking Assistance services are modular and one or all of the following can be selected:

  • Selecting directives and standards
  • Filling out the Technical Report Form (TRF)
  • Testing to the selected standards
  • Compiling the Technical Documentation File (TDF)
  • Filling out the Declaration of Conformity (DoC)
  • Certification to the ATEX Directive, or IECEx Scheme, for certain panel constructions
