Webinar: AM Metal Powder is Within Spec, But Will it Build?

Metal Powder
  • Live Webinar

UL and LPW Technology, the market leader in the development, processing and supply of high quality metal powders and powder management products for the AM industry,  are collaborating to present the free webinar event, “AM Metal Powder is Within Spec, But Will it Build?”

Abstract

Powder specifications are vital in ensuring stable and reproducible processing. So it is clear that the ability to test a powder against the specification and ensure it is being met is vital. In this webinar, UL and LPW experts will discuss how powder can influence the Additive Manufacturing processing and final material properties of the built parts, and what properties influence powder behavior.

We will introduce the techniques used to measure the key powder properties, and discuss their pros and cons in the context of AM. A short case study will demonstrate how effective powder testing can be used as part of root cause analysis in AM, which could save time and expense.

Presenters

Dr. Neil Harrison

LPW Materials Development Manager

Dr. Neil Harrison uses his knowledge of the behaviors of alloys and materials on Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) systems to provide technical and consultation services.  His expertise in metal additive manufacturing includes the development and design of alloys and powders optimized for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), and spans both research and practical implementation.

Neil’s PhD at the University of Sheffield was on solidification, microstructure and material response of nickel superalloys processed by LPBF.  He has published works on microstructure and solidification theory in LPBF, and reduction of microcracking in nickel superalloys.

Dr. Khalid Rafi

UL AM Lead Development Engineer

Joining UL in 2015, Dr. Khalid Rafi is responsible for the development of AM materials validation and process validation programs at UL’s Global AM Center of Excellence in Singapore. Leveraging his 14 years of experience in teaching and research, Rafi is also engaged in the development and delivery of UL’s AM training program.

Rafi is recognized as one of the few established metallurgists within the AM industry. His research focuses on process optimization, materials characterization and developing structure-property correlations for metallic parts produced using additive manufacturing techniques including selective laser melting (SLM), electron beam melting (EBM) and ultrasonic consolidation (UC).

Rafi holds a Masters and PhD in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India and has earned a post-doctoral fellowship from the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
