The textile industry is under increasing pressure to minimise its impact upon the environment and improve the sustainability of supply chains. One aspect of textile supply chain management that is under particular scrutiny is the use of hazardous chemicals in the manufacturing process that can be discharged into waste water. Numerous initiatives have emerged to address this issue.

UL Consumer & Retail Services (CRS) is an official contributor of the ZDHC Programme and supports the implementation of sustainable chemistry and best practices in the textile, leather and footwear industries to protect consumers, workers and the environment.

ZDHC has Granted Provisional Acceptance to UL CRS Laboratories

ZDHC has granted UL CRS provisional acceptance for wastewater and sludge analysis in connection with the ZDHC Gateway – Wastewater Module. Learn more about approved laboratories.

UL is a ZDHC Accredited Training Provider

UL CRS is accredited by the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Foundation to be their official training provider for the textile and footwear industry. This official training includes the five ZDHC modules.  Learn more about this recognition and consult our ZDHC global training calendar.

The Importance of Sampling in Wastewater Testing

Testing wastewater requires expertise, professionalism and the appropriate equipment.  Sampling is the first phase of the analytical process and is of great importance in assessing wastewater quality to specific technical standards and the ZDHC Guidelines.  For the reliability of the analytical results, UL has developed specific procedures from the initial wastewater withdrawal to the delivery of the final result.

Sampling activities performed by UL are carried out by competent technical staff who are up to date on all environmental issues.  The sampling plans used by UL technicians allows for:

  • the identification of a correct sampling strategy
  • the development of representative samples
  • the use of specific equipment for the on-site parameters measurements and for sampling
  • the absence of external contamination by the equipment used during sampling
  • the absence of release or absorption by containers
  • the absence of reactions that could chemically or physically modify the sample
  • the proper preservation of the sample from the sampling phase to the delivery to the laboratory

UL’s Chemical Management System

A Chemical Management System is a systematic approach to procuring, storing, using and disposing of chemicals within a facility.  One of the key elements of a chemical management system is the existence of chemical inventory in the factory.  A technical review of the chemical inventory done by UL can support:

  • Compliance with legislation
  • Conformity to your RSL and MRSL
  • Definition of targeted testing programmes
  • Substitution of polluting chemicals
  • Reaction to new chemical legislations/evidence
  • Improvements in your detox commitments
  • Safety in the workplace
