Recent legislation has allowed Zimbabwe farms to employ farmworkers for up to four and a half years on short-term contracts. The short-term and often low paying, nine-month contracts can be renewed by employers up to six times. Some unions have condemned the legislation, saying low pay, poor working conditions, and lack of bargaining power, forces workers into a form of slavery.
