The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has drafted three standards for food contact materials.

The standards are:

  • DUS 1679: 2017 Specification for polyvinylchloride (PVC) for its safe use in contact with food stuffs, pharmaceuticals and drinking water 
    • This draft standard specifies the requirements and methods of sampling and test for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and its copolymers for the manufacture of plastic items used in contact with foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and drinking water.
  • DUS 1668: 2017 Specification for Polyethylene for its safe use in contact with food stuffs, pharmaceuticals and drinking water 
    • This draft standard specifies the requirements and methods of sampling and test for polyethylene plastic materials for the manufacture of plastic items used in contact with foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and drinking water.
  • DUS 1666: 2017 Polystyrene for its safe use in contact with foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and drinking water – Specification 
    • This standard specifies requirements, sampling and test methods for polystyrene (crystal and high impact) materials for the manufacture of plastic items used in contact with foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and drinking water.

Important dates are:

  • Final date of comments: October 6, 2017
  • Proposed date of adoption: December 2017
  • Proposed date of entry into force: Upon declaration as mandatory by the Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives.
