UL Consumer and Retail Services has entered a formal relationship with the Diamond Development Initiative (DDI) with the signing of a memorandum of understanding on October 31, 2017.

Since 2008, DDI has been working to effect systemic change within the artisanal and small-scale mining sector by convening all interested parties in processes and projects that help turn precious stones and minerals into a source of sustainable development. DDI International is registered in the United States as a 501 ©3 nonprofit organization.

Dedicated to advancing sustainable business practices within supply chains worldwide, UL supports DDI’s efforts to enable and recognize the responsible production of alluvial artisanal diamonds with first-of-its-kind standards.

UL worked with DDI in a pro-bono advisory capacity with the drafting and development of the Maendeleo Diamond Standards in 2016, and the subsequent revisions in 2017. The Standards contribute to the improvement of the socio-economic conditions of miners, and the use of environmentally sustainable practices. The Standards and their certification system help to connect miners to responsible-sourcing supply chain practices in the jewelry sector.

As one of the world’s largest providers of supply chain auditing and monitoring services, UL is a global leader in testing, inspections, and responsible sourcing. UL provides innovative services across the jewelry, gemological, and precious metals industries.

Under the new agreement, UL will provide education and training support services to DDI, with a focus on responsible sourcing and social auditing best practices, enabling DDI to train partners on the ground to undertake the audits of artisanal mining sites. UL will also conduct audits on behalf of other private entities applying the MDS standards. UL becomes the exclusive third-party service provider and partner to DDI.

With this renewed partnership, UL is contributing to DDI’s mission to transform artisanal diamond mining and improve the lives of miners, their families, and their communities.
