Europe’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has opened a public consultation for the preliminary opinion they released for the use of hydroxyethoxyphenyl butanone (HEPB) in cosmetic products.

The preliminary opinion states that it is not safe to use cosmetic products with hydroxyethoxyphenyl butanone (HEPB) products at a maximum concentration of 2.0 %. HEPB is used as a preservative in rinse-off, oral care and leave-on cosmetic products.

The opinion also suggests that using HEPB shall only be at a maximum concentration of 0.7% in rinse-off, oral care and leave-on cosmetic products.

The consultation will end on March 10, 2017.
