The European Commission (EC) has published Commission Regulation (EU) 2018213 Regulation on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in varnishes and coatings intended to come into contact with food and amending Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 as regards the use of the substance in plastic food contact materials.

This Regulation states that the migration into or onto food of BPA from varnishes and coatings applied to materials and articles shall not exceed a specific migration limit (SML) of 0,05 mg of BPA per kg of food (mg/kg). Also, it restricts the use of BPA from varnishes and coatings applied to materials and articles intended to come into contact with infant formula, follow-on formula, processed cereal-based food, baby food, food for special medical purposes developed to satisfy the nutritional requirements of infants and young children or milk-based drinks and other products specifically intended for young children, as stated in Regulation (EU) No 6092013.

This Regulation shall apply from September 6, 2018.
