UL Performance Verification Mark - FAQs

Q. Why is UL introducing a new Performance Verification Mark for communications wire and cabling products?

A. UL customers expect UL Marks to be recognized by their customers, LAN system designers and the regulatory community. The new Mark clearly identifies products that have been evaluated for transmission performance to recognized industry performance standards. UL developed this Mark at its customers' request, to meet the unique needs of the communications industry.

Q. What are Listing and Verification Marks and how are they different?

A. The UL Listing Mark on a product means that UL has tested and evaluated representative samples of that product and determined that they meet the requirements of UL Standards for Safety, such as fire propagation, shock, etc. Products bearing a Verification Mark have been investigated by UL to an industry performance standard, such as TIA/EIA. All UL Marks are registered certification Marks of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., and may only be used on or in connection with products certified by UL under the terms of written agreement with UL.

Q. How will using the Performance Verification Mark help me sell my products?

A. Our customers tell us that UL's performance verification testing provides a high level of confidence in their products by the communications industry, structured cabling system designers and consultants. The UL Performance Verification Program lends credibility to your performance claims and is backed by a respected and knowledgeable third-party testing laboratory.

Q. What does the Performance Verification Mark look like?

The new UL Verified Performance MarkA. The new Mark features the famous UL in a circle. The word "VERIFIED" appears directly beneath the Mark. Labels on products indicate which performance standards were used to evaluate a product.

Q. Do I need to use the new Mark right away?

A. A mandatory effective date for using the Performance Verification Mark will be decided after UL has had the opportunity to talk to current customers regarding a reasonable implementation period. We want to allow our customers time to make adjustments for production and packaging, as well as updating their promotional literature showing the new Performance Verification Mark. Our customers will play a significant role in determining an effective date.

Q. Will the Performance Verification Mark cost more money?

A. This upgrade in product marking will not result in any additional cost.

Q. Will I be able to use the Mark in my sales and promotional materials?

A. Yes. The UL Performance Verification Mark for communications products can be one of your most valuable marketing tools. It means your products have successfully met stringent industry performance standards. It also distinguishes your company and your products from competitors who have not earned a UL Performance Verification Mark. This can significantly influence your customers' purchasing decisions. Only UL can authorize use of the new Mark in advertising and promotional campaigns. Questions regarding use of the Mark in your promotional communications, can be answered by your UL representative. Q. I want to start using the new UL Performance Verification Mark immediately. Where can I get it?
