Notified Body Intervention

Annex IV of the MD lists equipment which would require the intervention of a Notified Body to demonstrate compliance.

A Notified Body is a third party authorized to perform functions relating to specific clauses within a Directive, and which:

  1. has been appointed by the Competent Administrative Authority within a Member State
  2. has the necessary qualifications;
  3. meets the requirements laid down in the directive; and
  4. has been notified to the European Commission and to the other Member States.

This list of Annex IV machinery consists of:

  • various woodworking machines;
  • metal presses;
  • injection and compression-moulding machines;
  • devices for lifting persons;
  • pyrotechnic manufacturing machines;
  • machinery for underground working;
  • vehicles servicing lifts; and
  • certain safety components.

The degree of intervention by the Notified Body can take one of three forms:

  1. Acknowledgment of receipt of the technical construction file;
  2. Verification of applicability and correct application of standards; or
  3. EC type-examination.
