Telephones and Telephone Accessories for Use in Hazardous LocationsThe need to communicate does not stop at the border of what is generally considered to be a "Hazardous Location." Typically, these are areas where there is a risk that an explosive atmosphere may be present and there is a critical need to eliminate the possibility of igniting what may be a volatile mixture. Such locations include but are not limited to oil refineries, chemical storage areas and the like." UL has several categories that cover telephone equipment for use in Hazardous Locations (HazLoc). These categories include equipment such as telephones, sound powered telephones, communication equipment and systems, dialing units, push-button stations, relays, snap switches, as well as conduit boxes having terminal blocks for connection to telephone sets. Unless identified as intrinsically safe or for use in Division 2 locations only, the equipment covered is of the explosion-proof design.
