Conformity Assessment Body Program

UL has been designated as a Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) for radio and telecommunications terminal equipment and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. has entered into the operational phase of the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) between U.S. and Europe for the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (R&TTE) Directives. In your global market place, the ability to provide one-stop global solutions further strengthens UL as the world's premier third-party safety and certification organization.

As a conformity assessment body (CAB) under the US/EU MRA, in addition to testing products, UL can now review data and issue certificates to manufacturers without the involvement of European testing bodies. Serving as a "Competent Body" under the EMC Directive, UL has the authority to evaluate and "endorse" a manufacturer's technical construction file through a report or certificate. This Directive applies to apparatus liable to cause electromagnetic disturbance or the performance of which is liable to be affected by such disturbance. As a "Notified Body" under the R&TTE Directive, UL can identify and approve the essential radio test suites applicable to a product (ANNEX III) and review and approve a manufacturer's technical construction file demonstrating compliance with the identified essential requirements (ANNEX IV).

Combined with UL's international safety programs, the CAB designation under the US/EU MRA enables UL to provides manufacturers with instant access to European markets.

The operational phase of the US/EU MRA agreement begins after a two-year confidence building period in which UL has demonstrated competence to NIST and the European Union in the areas covered by the Directives.
