Certification for safety-related systems

UL's Programmable Electronics/Software Safety (PE/SS) program helps you find your way through the maze of newly developing software safety requirements.

Governments and industries are in the process of developing new safety standards for computer-controlled components, products and systems. This is a result of the computerization of industrial controls, electrical medical equipment, information technology equipment, appliance control systems and other product categories.

While increasing the speed and performance of systems, computerization brings with it a new set of risks, especially for controls used in safety-related functions.

At UL, we recognize that an increasing number of our clients design products using software controls much more complex than their traditional electro-mechanical predecessors. In response to this need, UL now offers Programmable Systems Certification Services (PSCS), a program that reviews and certificates programmable systems that provide monitoring, control and protection in safety-related systems.

Our certification services are designed with the flexibility to meet your needs. We can review products to ANSI UL 1998, Standard for Software in Programmable Components IEC 61508 Functional Safety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety Related Systems as well as to other international standards and directives, depending on where you want to market your product. Obtaining a Programmable Systems Certificate from UL is the first step in building global appeal for your product.
