What happens when sprinklers get old?NOTE: This information is from a printed newsletter dated 1999 and is presented here for archival purposes only. For current information, please see the main Sprinkler Industry pages. When the operation of sprinklers becomes questionable due to age, mishandling or environmental conditions, a building owner has two options. One is complete replacement of all of the sprinklers in the system. A more cost-effective alternative is laboratory testing of sprinklers sampled from the system. UL has been testing sprinklers sampled from field installations for more than 40 years - for regulatory authorities, the insurance industry, property owners and the sprinkler industry. A UL report on the test results of field-sampled sprinklers can help these groups assess the effectiveness of a sprinkler system and the need to replace sprinklers currently in service.
