UL launches new standards development process

UL has long valued the knowledge and involvement of the inspection and regulatory community in its certification and standards development process.

UL is currently implementing a new process for developing and achieving consensus for UL's Standards for Safety. This new endeavor involves the formation to Standards Technical Panels (STPs) - knowledgeable, interested parties - who will serve as the main standards development forum. As a result of the open consensus process, UL Standards will be ANSI approved upon publication.

This new process is being developed to get more direct participation of code officials in UL's standards development process. There are several opportunities for interested members of the inspection and regulatory community to join STPs in their areas of interest and expertise, so that UL requirements better reflect the concerns of the inspection community. This would ensure direct and early participation in UL's standards development process.

New ways for AHJs to participate in the STP process

  • Direct AHJ participation in the standards development process
  • Voting on proposed requirements before they are published in the standards
  • Open meetings, though attendance is not necessary to participate (all voting is conducted by letter ballots)
