UL Announces New Service for Aerospace Customers

NORTHBROOK, IL, Oct. 3, 2006 - Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) today announced a new service offering based on the ISO 9001:2000 standard. The new service is administered by the Global Quality Registration Services Group (QRS) and provides certification to customers looking to demonstrate compliance to the AS9120 Aerospace Standard Quality Management System - Aerospace Requirements for Stockist Distributors.

The AS9120 standard was specifically developed for organizations that procure parts, materials and assemblies and sells these products to a customer in the aerospace industry. This includes organizations that buy products and split them into smaller lots. Organizations that perform work that affects or could affect product characteristics or conformity will use AS9100 or another appropriate quality management system standard. The standard was built around requirements defined in AS9100/ISO 9001:2000 standard which uses the Plan, DO, Check, ACT (PDCA) system to ensure that the standard requirements, as well as a company's quality plans, goals and objectives, are achieved with a minimum of waste and redundancy in operations and the supply chain.

"With the continuing growth of the aerospace industry, UL needed to expand our Aerospace Quality Management System (QMS) service offerings to ensure that we stay abreast of our customer's needs and the needs of their suppliers," said John H. Schmidt, Senior Vice President, Chief Development Officer. "To this end, compliance to the AS9120 standard will give our customer's the guidance and QMS framework to stay competitive in a changing global economy."

Aerospace suppliers continually face the challenge of delivering product to multiple customers, each having varied quality expectations and requirements. To assure customer satisfaction, aerospace industry organizations must produce, and continually improve, safe, reliable products that meet or exceed customers and regulatory agency requirements.

Customers obtaining registration to AS9120 from UL also receive ISO 9001:2000 registration. AS9120 provides a great option for UL aerospace customers whose primary scope of registration is distribution. Customers now have the option of creating a quality management system tailored to their business model, instead of creating an AS9100 quality management system where many of the requirements are not applicable to their organization. The AS9120 Aerospace Standard can be purchased from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at www.sae.org
