Underwriters Laboratories Qualifies Specialized Technology Resources As Partner Lab For RoHS Testing

To meet the increasing demand from manufacturers for compliance with global environmental directives, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) has qualified the Specialized Technology Resources, Inc., (STR) laboratory in Turkey to perform testing for UL in accordance with the European Union's RoHS Directive. STR, which started as a materials development and testing facility, is the oldest independent, continuously operating plastics laboratory in the United States, with 14 testing facilities worldwide.

Under UL's RoHS program, STR (Turkey) will be performing chemical analyses of homogeneous materials to determine the levels of certain hazardous substances (lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, mercury, PBB and PBDE) that are restricted by the RoHS Directive.

"UL has had a strong relationship with STR in safety certification for more than 40 years," said David Haataja, vice president of UL's restricted substances business sector. "The qualification of the Turkey facility adds to the already strong partnership we have with STR for RoHS testing in other countries and expands UL's testing capabilities in Europe for this important Directive."

A candidate lab seeking UL's RSCS qualification has to meet the following criteria:

  • Access to appropriate instruments, lab standards and reagents
  • A laboratory management system that complies with ISO 17025
  • Technical competency and a full understanding of UL test methodologies

"STR (Turkey), the most recent STR lab to gain qualified status, is very pleased to be part of the UL RoHS program," said Mike Potterton, general manager of STR (Turkey). "As complying with global environmental directives becomes more important to manufacturers worldwide, STR is well positioned to help UL assist companies achieve this goal in a timely and effective manner."
