Underwriters Laboratories & The Central Station Alarm Association Launch Insurance Educational Campaign

NORTHBROOK, Ill., July 6, 2006 - Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) and the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) today announced a joint awareness campaign aimed at helping insurance companies better understand the differences among alarm systems; specifically how fire and burglar alarm systems that have been issued a certificate with a UL Mark can help insurance companies reduce risk and possibly mitigate future losses.

"Recently, with the changes that have occurred in the economic environment, the insurance industry has begun to refocus on "traditional" underwriting - placing more emphasis on issues such as loss prevention and education," said Stanley Oppenheim, CSAA member and president of DGA Security Systems. "Organizations such as UL and CSAA have a unique window of opportunity to help re-educate the underwriting community regarding the benefits of UL Listed standard service."

The awareness campaign focuses on the resulting peace of mind that a UL certificated alarm system can provide, since a UL certificated system offers a level of assurance that the alarm protection provided complies with all relevant standards.

"When an installed alarm system is covered by an active UL Alarm System certificate, insures can be confident knowing that the alarm service provider is enrolled in a systematic surveillance program that assures ongoing standards compliance of equipment, installation, maintenance AND monitoring through audits by UL's expert staff," said Steve Schmit, Alarm Certificate Program Manager. "It's important for insurance professionals to understanding that the range in quality and effectiveness among alarm systems and the companies that install and monitor them can affect the risk of paying out claims."

UL offers a free CD detailing its certificate program, called "Fire Alarm Certificate Program," and for a limited time, CSAA is also offering the book, "A Practical Guide To Central Station Burglar Alarm Systems" at a discounted rate for the insurance professional.
