Taiwan's Construction and Planning Agency Announces Accreditation of Underwriters Laboratories

NORTHBROOK, Ill., June 8, 2005 - Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) announced today that it has been accredited by Taiwan's Construction and Planning Agency (CPA). A sector of the Ministry of the Interior, the CPA handles matters involving the administration of national construction affairs in Taiwan, the ninth-largest trade market for the United States. The accreditation now enables UL test reports to be used to demonstrate compliance with Taiwanese passive fire-resistance requirements, making it easier for its fire-resistance customers to enter the growing Asia-Pacific building market.

Products covered by the accreditation include columns, beams, floors, decks, walls and partitions; through-penetration fire-stop systems; and dampers. Now when UL customers submit a bid to supply products for a construction project in Taiwan, they can send a UL test report to CPA's Technical Appraisal Center as evidence of product compliance.

"This accreditation marks an important step for UL in helping North American fire-resistance product manufacturers gain access to the global marketplace," said J. Thomas Chapin, general manager of UL's Fire Safety Strategic Business Unit. "UL will continue to establish additional inroads into Taiwan via the Taiwanese Standards Body, as well as continuing to expand opportunities for North American-based customers throughout the Asia-Pacific region, focusing particularly on China, Korea and India."

In addition, Underwriters Laboratories of Canada is currently applying for Taiwan CPA accreditation, which will afford manufacturers with the ULC Mark similar access to Taiwan's building market.
