Keith Williams Elected New Board Member to US-China Business Council

NORTHBROOK, Ill. - June 6, 2006: The US-China Business Council (USCBC) today announced the election of Keith Williams, president and CEO of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), as a member of the US-China Business Council's Board of Directors. The USCBC also announced the election of W. James McNerney Jr., chairman, president and CEO of The Boeing Company, as the USCBC's chair, as well as the election of other officers and directors.

Williams, 53, leads the world's premier not-for-profit product safety and certification organization. UL currently employs nearly 5,800 engineers, technicians and professionals working worldwide, all dedicated to helping manufacturers bring safer products to market faster.

Before coming to UL in April 2005, Williams spent eight years with Medtronic Inc., the world leader in medical device therapies, in a variety of positions, including president of the company's Asia Pacific operations, president of its spinal & neurological business and chief officer of its quality & regulatory activities. Williams also lived in Beijing from 1993-96 when he managed General Electric's Greater China medical devices group.

Williams noted, "The US-China Business Council is the best resource a company could have in navigating the China market effectively, regardless of whether that company has been in China for decades or is just beginning to explore options and opportunities." He added, "The Council's leadership on China-related policy matters is especially important, both in the United States and China."

USCBC President John Frisbie said, "I am delighted with today's election of Jim McNerney and the other officers and board members. USCBC has a strong board of business leaders with a balanced view of our commercial relationship with China."

Since coming to China in 1980, UL has set up a joint venture with the China Certification & Inspection (Group) Co. Ltd. (CCIC). Today, UL-CCIC offers comprehensive China market access agency services to manufacturers abroad to help them obtain the CCC Mark in the most efficient manner while also offering Chinese manufacturers product safety testing and certification services for access to North American and other international markets. With 300 employees and five offices throughout China, UL-CCIC is well on its way to becoming a one-stop test site, not only for goods destined for North American markets but also for goods sold around the globe.
