Drink up! Or not?
Underwriters Laboratories DrinkWell™ Program Launches for Private Well Water Consumers
How do you know if your water is safe to drink?
NORTHBROOK, Ill., May 25, 2004 - Fifty-three million Americans use wells, cisterns or springs as their drinking water source. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends private well testing annually, but each year, 95 percent of wells go untested. Because private wells are not regulated under the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, families have the responsibility to safeguard the quality of the water their family consumes.
UL is proud to announce the launch of DrinkWell™, a new web-based private well water testing program that can help identify potential hazards in your drinking water.
The DrinkWell web site, www.uldrinkwell.com, not only offers important information to consumers on water contaminants, but allows individuals to take a quick survey to determine what test would be most appropriate for their family based on certain variables, including location, plumbing in the home, and the age of the well. By simply clicking on the list of contaminants that's provided on the site, you can access information specific to that contaminant including federal limits, published health or aesthetic effect information and sources.
After users enter the site and determine what contaminants they want to test for in their water, they "checkout" and receive an easy-to-use sampling kit a few days later. Once the water is collected at the source, it is then sent to UL's 70,000 square foot drinking water facility in South Bend, Ind., for analysis. Consumers will receive a comprehensive DrinkWell report shortly thereafter that is color coded to easily understand the quality of the water.
If a tested contaminant is detected in the sample, DrinkWell will provide information on UL Listed drinking water treatment units (filters) to help customers resolve their problem.
