Underwriters Laboratories Enhances Product Directory CD For Fire Officials

NORTHBROOK, Ill., - April 14, 2006 - Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) today announced the launch of its 2006 edition fire-related directory CD providing UL Product Certification information for building materials, fire suppression and fire resistive products to building and fire regulators. The new CD, which contains the Building Materials, Fire Protection Equipment, Fire Resistance, and Roofing Materials & Systems directories, allows users to search all of these books simultaneously and makes UL Product Certification information more readily accessible to the building and fire regulators when Internet access is unavailable. In previous editions of the CD, the directories were only available in .pdf form, which made keyword searches impossible. The new CD is available to regulators free of charge.

The redesigned product directory CD incorporates the following improvements:

  • Advanced search capabilities include keywords, phrases, company name, fire-resistive design number, standard number and more and are comparable to those of UL's Online Certifications Directory, available online at www.ul.com/database.
  • Improved functionality due to use of Folio™ software, which is also used for National Fire Codes® and National Electrical Code®.
  • Expanded search feature allows users to search the four directories either individually or simultaneously.

"Feedback from regulators and others in the field who have used both past editions of the product directory CDs, as well as the UL Online Certifications Directory, stressed the need for the redesign," said Al Ramirez, manager of UL's Regulatory Services Department. "Enhancing search capabilities through new software was the key to providing users a tool as comprehensive as the Online Certifications Directory. The decision to redesign the CD is just another way that UL is working to be a valuable partner within the regulatory community."
