North American Hazardous Locations systemRole of third-party certifiers in the North American Hazardous Locations systemWith the North American HazLoc installation Codes and appropriate overall equipment safety requirements in place, and with HazLoc manufacturers designing equipment in accordance with these Codes and safety requirements, the role of HazLoc third-party certifiers can be summarized as follows:
Within the North American HazLoc system, there is a variety of HazLoc third-party certifiers– from those accredited to perform virtually all testing for all protection methods and product categories, such as UL, to those accredited to perform only a limited amount of testing under a limited number of protection methods and product categories. The following are some of the North American HazLoc certifications available through UL:
Note 1 – Also for North America, UL can assist with testing in accordance with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations as a means to facilitate obtaining MSHA certification for U.S. surface and underground mines. Note 2 – Beyond North America, UL can assist with testing in accordance with European, Latin America, Asian, Australian and other regulations as a means to facilitate obtaining certification for these regions of the globe.
