UL offers dual certification for marine shipboard cable

NORTHBROOK, Ill., May 1, 2002 -- Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), one of the world's foremost product-testing and certification organizations, announces a new dual certification service for marine shipboard cable manufacturers.

Using one or more of several international standards, such as IEEE 45-1998, IEEE 1580-2001 and IEC 6092-350, UL conducts construction, performance and safety tests on cable intended for installation aboard marine vessels, and/or fixed and floating offshore platforms.

Amercable, based in El Dorado, Ark., is the first wire and cable manufacturer to obtain this dual certification from UL. Their product was tested to the UL 1309 Marine Shipboard Cable standard and IEEE 1580-2001 and will feature a UL Listing Mark (the UL symbol together with the word "Listed," a control number and the product name "marine shipboard cable") combined with the UL Classification Mark (seen below).

"Previously, UL only provided certification services in accordance with UL 1309, but now we have the capabilities to meet wire and cable manufacturers' other certification needs. We're a one-stop shop," said Phil Laudicina, staff engineer, UL Melville, N.Y., USA.

UL is one of just a few organizations that offer dual certification services in the wire and cable industry. For more information on dual certification of marine shipboard cable, visit the UL marine Web site, or contact Phil Laudicina by phone at 1.631.546.2231; or by e-mail at philip.t.laudicina@us.ul.com.

UL is an independent, product safety certification organization that has tested and certified products, materials and systems in the interest of public safety for more than 107 years. More than 18 billion UL Marks appear on new products each year, and more than 18,000 types of products are tested at UL's five U.S. laboratories located in: Northbrook, Ill.; Melville, N.Y.; Santa Clara, Calif.; Research Triangle Park, N.C.; and Camas, Wash. Worldwide, the UL family of companies includes 27 affiliates in Canada, Mexico, Brazil and countries throughout Europe and Asia, and has more than 190 inspection centers in 72 countries.
