Mexico NOM equivalence agreement continues to be in force
On June 29, 2011, the Mexico Supreme Court made a determination not to suspend the NOM Equivalent Agreements which were introduced in 2010.
The ruling essentially means that UL customers can rest assured that they can continue to use the simple certification process covered by the Equivalence Agreements. Under the agreements, UL is authorized to issue Mexico Certificates of Compliance (CoC), which serve as an alternative means of entry into Mexico other than the NOM Mark Scheme. The agreements allow recognition of C-UL-US Certifications for US and Canada as equivalent to NOM certifications for most High Tech audio/visual products and information technology equipment. As long as there is a valid UL certification, UL Mexico will issue a Mexico CoC that will be recognized by Mexican customs to allow importation of products without any further safety requirements.
In addition to a simpler certification process, the Mexico Certificates of Compliance also offer manufacturers a number of immediate benefits such as cost and time savings. The CoCs eliminate duplicative product testing for the Mexico market, minimize administrative and project management efforts, and facilitate and accelerate access of your products into Mexico, as well as to the United States and Canada when combined with other UL Marks.
UL will continue to issue Mexico CoCs based on existing C-UL-US Certifications/Listings and provide manufacturers access to the Mexican market without any limitations or requirements for further testing. Customers are only required to provide UL either the UL File Number or basic information on the product they will be importing into Mexico. Based on the information retrieved from UL's database, a relevant CoC will be issue. The process will take no more than 48 hours.
As in the past, UL is also prepared to support our customers who would like to obtain a NOM Mark under our traditional NOM Mark Service through UL Mexico which is an approved NOM Certification Organization.
