Wireless power will change the way we live
Wireless power, wireless charging and inductive charging technologies are becoming increasingly commonplace. These technologies bring us new opportunities that will positively influence our day-to-day lives at work, at home and while travelling.
Wireless charging is still a "start-up" technology and a number of consortiums and companies are developing standards to address different issues faced by this technology in order to ensure its sustainable growth. An established standard is the first step for a technology to gain market acceptance and popularity.
UL has recently published the first-edition standard for Safety for Induction Power Transmitters and Receivers for Use with Low-energy Products. By getting products in conformance with UL 2738, manufacturers will be able to provide a solid safety proof to their stakeholders, which include customers, retailers and end consumers.
This article in the web magazine, Engadget®, offers a good overview of the standards relating to wireless charging, covering the safety and interoperability issues. UL 2738 is also referenced in the article as the safety standard crucial to the future of this technology: "certifications from UL are a huge indicator that there is a very strong interest in this type of service becoming mainstream, available on every street corner".
