Role of third-party certifiers

With the North American HazLoc installation Codes and appropriate overall equipment safety requirements in place, and with HazLoc manufacturers designing equipment in accordance with these Codes and safety requirements, the role of HazLoc third-party certifiers can be summarized as follows:

  • Independent HazLoc third-party certifiers, such as UL, assess the conformity of equipment with these requirements.
  • Individual HazLoc certification agencies, such as UL, not only serve as SDOs, but also serve as members of the technical committees charged with the development and maintenance of these HazLoc Codes and equipment requirements.
  • Additional HazLoc certification agencies are also able to impact these Codes and equipment requirements as part of requests for general industry comments that are part of the development and maintenance process.

Within the North American HazLoc system, there is a variety of HazLoc third-party certifiers -- from those accredited to perform virtually all testing for all protection methods and product categories, such as UL, to those accredited to perform only a limited amount of testing under a limited number of protection methods and product categories. The following are some of the North American HazLoc certifications available through UL:

  • UL Listing, Classification and Recognition Marks under the U.S. Division system
  • UL Listing, Classification and Recognition Marks under the U.S. Zone system
  • C-UL Listing, Classification and Recognition Marks under the Canadian Division system
  • C-UL Listing, Classification and Recognition Marks under the Canadian Zone system
  • ULC Mark under the Canadian Division system
  • ULC Mark under the Canadian Zone system

Note 1: Also for North America, UL can assist with testing in accordance with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations as a means to facilitate obtaining MSHA certification for U.S. surface and underground mines.

Note 2: Beyond North America, UL can assist with testing in accordance with European, Latin America, Asian, Australian and other regulations as a means to facilitate obtaining certification for these regions of the globe.
