Software review

A software product review can occur early in the design process and may continue throughout its development. Identifying safety risks early in the process can help avoid extensive redesign later, reducing time and costs.

As part of the PSCS investigation, a software engineer will review tests already conducted by the manufacturer according to applicable requirements. The main Standard software is reviewed to UL 1998, the Standard of Safety for Software in Programmable Components, which includes provisions for software updates and changes so the certification process won't have to be repeated if modifications occur.

Analysis for certification to UL 1998 is completed using a risk-based approach. This considers safety from a design perspective beginning with the design phase through implementation as part of the system.

UL will certify a product as part of a complete hardware/software certification package for compliance to domestic and global requirements.
