Software investigation

Depending on your software's state of readiness, UL offers several ways to assess conformance to accepted safety standards for software-controlled components. We suggest considering conformity assessment needs early in product development to minimize redesign costs later in the process.

  • UL can customize a seminar according to the needs of our customers to familiarize them with the requirements of UL 1998 and other international standards. UL will also detail the steps involved in the certification process.

The PSCS engineers use a four-step process to assess a company's preparedness.

  1. Identify products that have integrated circuits providing safety-related product features or that are driving electronic, electrical or mechanical safety components. This involves taking an inventory assessment to get a precise list of which products could be affected.
  2. Identify safety hazards beginning with overall product requirements. Trace hazards to the programmable components and software functions.
  3. Develop a consolidated list of requirements in the standards. For instance, local and international standards may apply when marketing products globally.
  4. Conduct an internal audit of all development and maintenance activities.
