Sprinkler is as sprinkler does

1996: One of the first high-piled stock tests was recently conducted in UL's new large-scale fire test facility in Northbrook, Ill. UL evaluated the performance of a new type of sprinkler manufactured by Central Sprinkler Co. of Lansdale, Pa.

Burning cardboard boxes filled with thousands of plastic cups were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the sprinklers under test. The boxes were stored on pallets and placed in racks to simulate warehouse storage conditions.

The test room is 120' by 120' by 55', with a 100' by 100' moveable ceiling. The facility also features specialized test cells including a 10-megawatt calorimeter outfitted with a 25-foot diameter adjustable hood, an Actual Delivered Density test room, and a dedicated cell with a laser-operated Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer for the measurement and analysis of water sprays.

On Aug. 24, the new UL facility received an annual "Project of the Year" award from the Illinois Engineering Council (IEC).
