UL Evaluation Service

UL Evaluation Reports help get building products to market faster offering one stop for complete code compliance

UL Evaluation Reports present UL's findings from an evaluation of products to ICC-ES (International Code Council's Evaluation Service) Acceptance Criteria and compliance with the intent of code requirements. Reports are provided to manufacturers and made available to the public. UL Evaluation Reports combined with your UL Safety Certification for building products can streamline market acceptance in a fraction of the time normally required to demonstrate compliance with the family of International Codes.

  • UL Safety Certifications and the trusted UL Mark assist code authorities, architects, designers, specifiers, contractors and other built environment influencers in determining code compliance for products where the model codes require testing and/or certification in accordance with specific standards.
  • UL Evaluation Reports further assist code authorities in determining code compliance and enforcing building regulations and assist architects, specifiers and contractors in determining code compliance in situations where products are not addressed in the codes, the codes are unclear or when the codes have multiple requirements for a single product.

UL is uniquely qualified to offer both services with its vast testing experience, technical excellence, thousands of UL product safety certifications within the built environment, intimate knowledge of the product and test standards referenced in the model codes, involvement with the model code development processes and ready acceptance of the UL Mark.

UL is committed to responding to your need for timely and value added service to help get your products to market faster.

 Frequently Asked Questions:

Q.  Why is UL offering its Evaluation Service?

A.  We heard the voice of our customers and we responded. We recognize that in some situations, code approval for new building materials or construction methods may go beyond the trusted UL Certification Mark.  Code authorities as well as architects, specifiers, and contractors have grown to depend on product evaluation reports to provide technical evidence that materials, products, designs and methods of construction comply with the intent of the building codes.  To satisfy this need, UL has been asked by many of our customers to use our expertise in codes and standards to deliver UL Evaluation Reports, and conduct quality assurance auditing to assist in determining code compliance and enforcing building regulations.

Q.  Why should I use the UL Evaluation Service?

A. You can expect smooth and timely service from UL in producing evaluation reports. By leveraging our product testing and certification experts, and knowledge and experience with code requirements and participation in the code process, we deliver the service you expect.  Additionally, you should expect the same market acceptance with your UL Evaluation Report you currently enjoy when your products bear the UL Mark.

Q. What products are applicable for UL Evaluation Service?

A. UL will provide evaluation reports for any building products that are UL Certified under UL's Follow-Up Service Program, under UL's Quality Assurance Program and where ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria is available, or the code requires compliance with multiple standards.

Q. Can UL guarantee acceptance of a UL Evaluation Report?

A. Code authorities are the decision-makers on the acceptance of products, materials and code compliance.  A UL Evaluation Report enhances the potential for product acceptance.  If code authorities have concerns or questions about UL Evaluation Reports, UL stands ready to respond promptly.

Q. Will UL convert existing evaluation reports from other organizations?

 A. Yes, in addition to developing new Evaluation Reports, UL will convert existing ICC-ES Evaluation Reports to UL Evaluation Reports.

Q. What are International or I-Codes?

A. The International Codes, or I-Codes, published by ICC (International Code Council® ) are used in construction of residential and commercial buildings and provide safeguards for people at home, at school and in the workplace.  The I-Codes are a complete set of comprehensive, coordinated building safety and fire prevention codes adopted by the fifty states within the U.S. at the state or jurisdictional level, the District of Columbia and other locations globally.

Q. Does UL accept data from other laboratories as evidence of code compliance?

A. Yes, UL will accept data from other laboratories that are acceptable to UL and properly accredited.

Q. Where can I locate UL Evaluation Reports?

A. UL Evaluation Reports can be found on UL's On-Line Certifications Directory at www.ul.com/database
