Toys
Marketplace Overview
UL Environment is proud to offer North America’s first and only voluntary, third-party, multi-attribute environmental certification for toys. This groundbreaking certification allows toy manufacturers to demonstrate true marketplace leadership by going above and beyond U.S. and European regulatory requirements purely for the sake of sustainability and children’s health.
Certification to UL Environment’s toy standard requires testing and verification to ensure that toys do not contain measureable carcinogens, certain neurotoxins, reproductive toxins, anti-microbial agents, heavy metals, or added fragrances. The standard also places strict limits on emissions of volatile organic compounds, a key contributor to childhood asthma; encourages socially responsible manufacturing practices; and helps minimize pollution generated by the production, use, and disposal of toys and their packaging.
From balls and action figures to costume clothing and jewelry, all play products made from wood, plastic, rubber, textiles, metal, and bio-based materials are eligible to pursue certification.
Competitive Advantage
At a time when toy safety recalls are top of mind for parents, going above and beyond regulatory compliance and certifying to UL Environment’s toy standard can help build and strengthen trust between manufacturers and consumers.
By committing to using safer chemicals, environmentally preferable materials, and ecologically and socially responsible manufacturing processes, toy manufacturers can give retailers and consumers peace of mind knowing that their toys are healthier for children and better for the environment.
