Water QualityCheckTM program

Proactively assess water quality at your facility

Do you - and visitors to your facility -- assume that your water meets the appropriate standards for drinking water? Are those safe assumptions? Gain added confidence with UL's Water QualityCheckTM program.

The water quality gap

Water distributed by a municipal system is not regulated for most contaminants regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act between the service line to a building and the tap. The quality of that water is the responsibility of the property owner.

Because you want safe, good-tasting water for everyone, you owe it to yourself to periodically monitor your water quality and review the water systems in your building. UL can help you do just that.

Water quality issues in buildings

Unique characteristics of water systems in buildings may magnify public health risks. Water quality issues in buildings can arise from:

  • Extreme temperatures
  • Little or no disinfection residual
  • Areas of stagnation
  • Cross connections or backflow events

Current maintenance practices may not be sufficient to prevent waterborne infection and illness. A problem may only be discovered after a public health problem occurs.

Program benefits

UL's Water QualityCheck program is specifically designed to address these issues by helping you:

  • Proactively identify and assess risks associated with drinking-water quality
  • Leverage UL's expertise in water quality and quality management systems
  • Communicate your commitment to providing high-quality water

How UL's Water QualityCheck program works

  • Step 1 -- Online survey, designed to establish the specific program scope for your facility
  • Step 2 -- Survey review conference call, including initial team introductions, information gap assessment, audit plan development
  • Step 3 -- Onsite initial quality assurance audit, including a review of your facility's water system and sample collection
  • Step 4 -- Presentation and review of analytical results and audit findings
  • Step 5 -- Routine follow-up to assess ongoing compliance

Facilities that comply with UL's Water QualityCheck program will be authorized to display a certificate of compliance. UL will also work with your facility to promote this accomplishment with your employees, customers and accreditors.

UL is a recognized leader in analytical compliance testing

  • UL has analyzed over 1.5 million drinking water samples for thousands of bottlers, public water supplies, engineering firms, consultants and state and federal agencies -- including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. military. In fact, UL conducts analyses of water samples from sites throughout the world for both the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.
  • UL is certified in 48 states and Puerto Rico, making it the most certified laboratory for drinking water analysis. Our laboratory was also one of first laboratories certified under the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP), a program that implements voluntary performance standards for the operation of environmental laboratories.

UL leverages the strength and knowledge of a top 5 global auditing firm through our partnership with UL-DQS

  • UL offers a broad reach of auditing services across multiple geographies.
  • UL's auditors have specific training in the area of premise plumbing and water quality issues.
  • UL has the advantage of a dedicated auditing staff, which allows for greater control, consistency and value-added results.

UL is an ANSI-accredited leader in water product certification

  • UL's ANSI-accredited water system product program certifies water products that treat, distribute, store and filter drinking water. Only products that pass UL's rigorous certification and ongoing compliance requirements can bear the UL Water Quality or Plumbing Marks.
  • UL's water product certification program is fully accredited in the United States and Canada and UL is a recognized certifier of water products by the EPA.
  • UL is an approved certifier of water products that meet the criteria of the EPA's WaterSenseSM program, which identifies and promotes the use of water-efficient products.
