Sample and information requirements

It is important to provide all electrical ratings for the product. These ratings are to be based upon standard test conditions defined as 25°C cell temperature, 1,000 W/m2 sunlight intensity, and an air mass 1.5 solar spectral content. These ratings are to include:

  • Rated voltage and current *
  • Maximum power rating
  • Short-circuit current rating
  • Open-circuit voltage rating for each module
  • Maximum system voltage rating

* This is the nominal voltage and current of an individual module when operating at maximum power.

** Maximum system voltage describes the highest voltage a module's insulation has been appraised to as most modules are used in array circuits containing many modules.

Ratings are also required at nominal operating cell temperature (NOCT), which is defined as the equilibrium cell junction temperature corresponding to an open-circuited module operating in a reference environment of 800 W/m2 irradiance, 20°C ambient air temperature with a 1 m/s wind across the module from side to side. These ratings include:

  • Product NOCT rated current
  • Product NOCT rated maximum power

If multiple models are to be submitted, please identify how these differ from one another.

If the photovoltaic products can or are intended to be roof mounted (or other surfaces of a habitable structure), they must obtain a fire resistance class rating, ranging from Class A (most fire resistant) to Class C (basic fire resistance). Review the sample requirements and test methodology as well as the applicable building code requirements of the intended market before specifying the fire class rating intended.

Please identify all polymeric material's UL Recognition, manufacturer, trade name, designation and how they are employed.

Polymeric materials used in PV connector systems must be resistant to ultraviolet light, water exposure and high temperatures.

If a product uses gaskets for protection of live parts, please identify the material used i.e. rubber, PVC, silicone, the manufacturer, dimensions, and its UL Recognition. The gaskets may still need further evaluation based upon the specific application.

If adhesive backed marking and labeling systems are used for markings that are required by the Standard, specific information will be needed to assist our engineers. Download this form for assistance with providing this information, click here (MS Word Format) or click here (PDF).

In order to prepare application forms, UL will need the name and address of the company who is applying for certification (applicant), the company who will hold the rights to the certification (listee or recognized company), and the company who will be manufacturing the product (manufacturer) if they are different from each other.

Once we receive the above information, UL will be able to determine the cost estimate and prepare the appropriate application forms.
