Burglar alarm listing process

Categories

Central Station (CPVX)

General requirements for these systems require guard response along with monitored openings and closings. A sounding device is not required.

Facility and operational requirements are found in UL 827, the Standard for Safety of Central-Station Alarm Services.

Installed system requirements are found in UL 681, the Standard for Safety of Installation and Classification of Burglar and Holdup Alarm Systems.

Mercantile (CVSG)

These systems, which may or may not be monitored off-premise, will always require the installation of a Listed sounding device. Requirements for these systems are found in UL 681.

Listing process

Once you have determined which of these categories is appropriate for you to obtain a Listing under, request an application for listing. Once you receive the application, complete and sign it, then return it to the UL office along with the required preliminary deposit.

When UL receives the properly completed application and deposit, one of our auditors will contact you to schedule the evaluation. The auditor will ask you to complete and return the preinspection forms. Usually you will need to provide us with four locations for our review for compliance with UL 681. We would like to see a variety of systems, which would include premise, safes or vault systems.

The day of the evaluation, we will review the forms with you and go over the requirements of UL 681 with you and your staff. Each site will be visited and checked for compliance. Please be prepared to have staff available who are familiar with the sites and can conduct the inspection with the UL representative. Your staff must be equipped with proper tools and ladders to inspect all parts of the systems. Once the field inspection is complete, we will return to your office to review the results of the inspection.

After the inspection, the UL representative will prepare a report that will include any requirements for corrective action for areas of noncompliance. Upon satisfactory clearance of the report, we will establish a Listing that will allow your company to issue certificates under this category.

If you are requesting a Listing under the central station burglar alarm category, you will also need to review the Central Station Facility section of this site. This area will provide you with the Listing process for the facility itself.
